RIVERVIEW --
Last year, Riverview High barely had enough runners to fill its girls cross country team.
"We had four girls last year," said Shanna Brown, who coaches both the girls and boys cross country teams at Riverview. "This year we have 15 and I have a lot more to work with.
"I think the main thing is that we had people who were on the team last year basically grabbing people in the hallways and telling them to come out because of how much fun it is."
One of those holdovers is sophomore Katie Hepburn.
"I've always liked running, but a couple of years ago my dad took me to one of the meets here just to watch and it was a lot of fun," said Hepburn, whose father, Mike, teaches physics at Riverview.
Hepburn, 15, was also a member of the school's track and field team last year, where she ran the mile, two-mile and the 4-by-800 relay.
"Well, it (running) keeps me in shape, but it's also a great way to clear my mind," she said. "I also really feel like I accomplished something when I'm done with a run."
So far, Hepburn's personal best in the 5K is 26 minutes, 9 seconds, achieved during the Sept. 27 Ron Frost Invitational at Durant High. Her previous personal best was 26:23.
Hepburn hopes to shave another minute from that time by the end of the season.
"She's come a long way from last year," Brown said. "She is the most polite, respectful kid on my team, never complains and does whatever I ask."
